Enter and View visit to Anvil Close
What we did
Visiting care homes that do not provide nursing continues to be a strategic priority of the use of our Enter and View powers, as we feel these homes get less scrutiny than other health and social care services.
Anvil Close provides care for adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities. The home is fully occupied with 12 permanent residents, ranging in age from their 40s to their 60s.
We aimed to use interviews with residents and observations during our visit at Anvil Close on 27th November 2014 and subsequent conversations with relatives to report on:
- The quality of individual care.
- The responsiveness of services to individual residents’ needs.
In total we spoke to 5 residents and 3 relatives.
Key Findings
The feedback was generally positive, with relatives particularly satisfied with personal care, and staff attitudes, with staff acknowledging the personal preferences of the residents.
The relatives raised the following concerns:
- Lack of help to residents dealing with loss and grief.
- Being uninformed of when difficulties arose in relation to resident’s care arrangements.
Our recommendations
Overall, residents and relatives are generally satisfied with the care provided at Anvil Close. However, based on our interviews and observations, there are some areas of improvement we recommended:
- Consideration should be given to ways of offering the less dependent residents a wider range of suitable options for relaxing but constructive activities in the evening.
- The provider should explore the possibility of providing suitable support for residents dealing with loss and bereavement. This might be an issue to raise in the Wandsworth Learning Disability Providers Forum.
