Government Green Paper on Young People's Mental Health
What we did
The Government's plans focus on proposals for earlier intervention and prevention through schools and colleges, among other things.
Over the years, we've received lots of feedback from young people about their mental health and this consultation gave us the opportunity to reflect on that feedback and to hear how people feel about the proposals.
At one of our events in February 2018 we used just four questions from the Government's Green Paper to get some really valuable feedback and combined this with feedback we had received to earlier consultations with local people.
Key highlights
- Success will depend on ability to manage demand and to sustain support long-term. People wanted to be assured that the measures will be properly resourced.
- Support should be with individuals and organisations the students trust. Investing in practical grassroots help may ensure that organisations who best understand the needs of young people can help with the practical issues around mental health. Consider links with and upskilling ‘trusted’ individuals at school and in community support networks
- Services should be designed with input from young people
- Resource needed for work with higher risk/higher need groups
- Support should be located on neutral ground with staff or individuals who are trusted
52 attendees, including memebrs of the public, representatives from voluntary sector organisations and students from a local college, provided their feedback.
We passed on the feedback in a response to the Government as well as local commissioners who were at our event and heard some of the feedback first hand.
