Enter & View visits to Ronald Gibson House
What we did
We met the commissioning managers to get a better understanding of the bed-based intermediate care service at Ronald Gibson House and how it fits in to wider services and discuss the feasibility of an Enter & View visit and particular issues we might explore.
As well as exploring patients' experience we could usefully look at how well the service was meeting Intermediate care objectives, in particular rehabilitation.
Ronald Gibson House is a 16-bed unit in a care home on the Springfield Hospital site in Tooting.
When we visited, there were thirteen patients in the unit.
We interviewed eight of them along with three relatives and one paid home carer.
We also spoke to the GP responsible for medical oversight of the unit, and three other members of staff.
Key Findings
- To look further at giving medication at appropriate times, in preparation for discharge and encouraging patients to take their own medication where possible.
- Brendon Care and St George’s Hospital told us they reviewed medication assessments and improved admission processes.
- Make clearer information available for patients about GP's availability and role and review patient information leaflets which describes their role within the service.
- Consider reinforcing awareness of the risk of falls and how to avoid them.
- To carry out more formal education on falls awareness.
- At the moment they run a daily exercise group therefore, they intend to use this group to deliver Stay Steady talks.
